Home Visits

Home VisitsThere are many families who live happily with their canine friends without ever encountering any problems. There are also many who find that the dog develops behaviours which they cannot cope with . These can be anything from soiling the house to showing aggression towards family members or visitors. These behaviours can frequently be modified once the reasons for them are diagnosed. It is important to remember that everyone has a different idea as to how their pet should behave. People have different goals. Occasionally their goals and the dogs needs can not be met but frequently once the dog and owner can understand each other many issues can be resolved.

Dogs are amazing animals. They try very hard to understand what is expected of them. We do not always do the same for them. Dogs see things in a very ‘black and white’ way---there is no ‘grey’. We are inconsistent, moody and very confusing in our methods of communication.
When Penny is called in to see a client at home she will spend upwards of 2 hours with them watching the relationship between dog and family. During this time she will get a good profile on the dog and from there will put together a personal programme of behavioural modification where appropriate. A follow up visit is usually arranged to check on progress and to build further on the work that may be necessary.

Penny will liaise with the clients vet when needed particularly if she should feel that there is a clinical reason for the behaviour or where she feels it advisable to seek veterinary advice for drug support therapy (in severe cases of Separation Disorders for example).
Home Visits would be advised for the following;

  • Aggression towards visitors or family members
  • Separation Disorders
  • Inter dog aggression in the home or out doors
  • Soiling in the home
  • Extreme Vocalisation
  • Shadow chasing/ tail chasing/ obsessive disorders
  • Noise phobias
  • General lack of response from the dog /disobedience around the home

Many people also like to call Penny in when they have a new puppy to help avoid developing any issues at a later date.
Some outdoor issues are better tacked with a home visit to begin with to help build on the human/canine relationship before transferring to an outdoor environment.
